What is a Backwater Valve?

A backwater valve is a device installed in your plumbing system that prevents wastewater from flowing back into your home. Typically, it's placed in the sewer line or drain line that leads from your house to the municipal sewer system. When working correctly, it allows water and waste from your home to flow out into the sewer, but if water tries to flow back towards your home (like during heavy rain or a flood), the valve automatically closes to block the reverse flow. This helps protect your home from sewage backups, which can cause flooding and contamination.

How does a Backwater Valve Work?

Stormwater-system-Mississauga
Backwater valve diagram

1. Normal Operation: During typical conditions, wastewater flows from your home’s drains (like sinks, toilets, and showers) into the main sewer line. The backwater valve remains open during this time, allowing wastewater to exit your home freely towards the municipal sewer.

2. Flood Conditions Begin: During a heavy rainfall or flood, the municipal sewer systems can become overwhelmed. This excess water can start to reverse direction, attempting to flow back towards homes.

3. Valve Activation: As the floodwater attempts to reverse into your home’s sewer line, the backwater valve detects this reverse flow. A flap or gate inside the valve, which normally stays open to let wastewater out, automatically closes when it senses the backward flow of water.

4. Blocking Backflow: Once the valve closes, it creates a seal that prevents the floodwaters and any sewage mixed with it from entering your home through your drainage system. This helps protect your basement and lower floors from flooding and potential contamination.

5. Flood Recedes: After the floodwaters recede and normal water flow resumes, the pressure decreases, allowing the valve to open again. Wastewater can now freely flow from your home into the sewer system as it normally would.

6. Maintenance: It’s important to periodically check and maintain the backwater valve to ensure it’s free from debris and operational, as stuck or blocked valves may fail during critical times.

By preventing the reverse flow of water into your home, the backwater valve acts as a critical safeguard against flood-induced sewage backups, keeping your living space dry and clean during such events.

To unblock a drain, expect to pay between $215 and $540, with an average price of $360. Drain cleaning comes with full HD camera inspection and 90 day service warranty.
  • How can I prevent my drains from getting clogged?
Preventing drain clogs involves mindful usage and regular maintenance. Avoid pouring grease down the kitchen sink, install hair catchers in shower drains, and flush only toilet paper down the toilet. Regularly running hot water down the drains can also help prevent the buildup of residues.
  • How can tree roots affect my drainage system and lead to clogs?
Tree roots can significantly affect your drainage system and lead to clogs in several ways: Infiltration: Small tree roots can infiltrate cracks or joints in pipes, seeking moisture. Once inside, they can grow and expand, obstructing the flow of water. Blockage: As roots grow, they can catch and accumulate debris flowing through the pipes, creating a blockage. Pipe Damage: Larger roots can exert pressure on pipes, potentially causing them to break or collapse, leading to significant blockages and the need for repairs.
  • What are the most common signs that my drain is clogged?
Drain clogs are often caused by the accumulation of everyday materials like hair, soap scum, grease, and small objects. In kitchens, grease and food scraps can build up over time, while in bathrooms, hair and soap residues are common culprits. Sometimes, the roots of trees can infiltrate sewer lines, causing significant blockages.
  • What should I avoid putting down my drains to prevent clogs?
To maintain the health of your plumbing system and prevent clogs in your drains, it's crucial to be mindful of what goes down them. Here are items and substances you should avoid putting down your drains: Grease, Oil, and Fat: These substances may seem harmless in liquid form but can solidify inside pipes, creating stubborn blockages. Instead, pour them into a container and dispose of them in the trash. Coffee Grounds: Coffee grounds don't break down in water. Instead, they can accumulate and form a sediment-like layer in your pipes, leading to clogs. Eggshells: When ground by a garbage disposal, eggshells turn into a sandy substance that can combine with other wastes to form blockages. Produce Stickers: Those little stickers on fruits and vegetables can stick to the insides of pipes and contribute to clogs. They can also get stuck in water treatment plant pumps and screens. Medications: Flushing medications down the toilet or sink can contaminate water supplies and harm aquatic life. It's best to dispose of them as per your local community guidelines. Paper Products (Other than Toilet Paper): Items like paper towels, napkins, and tissues are designed to absorb water and not break down easily. They can quickly cause blockages in your pipes. Feminine Hygiene Products: These products are not designed to break down in water and can cause significant blockages in pipes. Cotton Balls and Swabs: They may seem small and harmless, but they can clump together and cause blockages in your pipes. Paint: Paint can contain harmful chemicals and also create a sticky residue inside pipes. It's best to dispose of paint according to local hazardous waste guidelines. Construction Debris: Substances like grout or joint compound can harden in your pipes, narrowing them and potentially leading to blockages. By avoiding these items and being cautious about what goes down your drains, you can significantly reduce the risk of clogs and maintain a smooth-running plumbing system.
  • Can I do plumbing repairs on my own, or should I always call a professional?
Simple tasks like changing a washer might be DIY-friendly, but for most plumbing work, professional expertise ensures safety, compliance, and durability. Drain Stream is here to provide expert service.
  • How can I reduce my water bill through plumbing upgrades?
Absolutely! We can install water-efficient fixtures, fix leaks, and recommend appliances that conserve water and reduce your bills.
  • How can I fix a clogged drain?
Fixing a clogged drain can often be done using simple tools and methods you might already have at home. Here's a step-by-step guide: 1. Boiling Water: Sometimes, a clog can be cleared by pouring boiling water down the drain. Do this slowly, in stages, allowing the hot water to work for several seconds between each pour. 2. Plunger: If boiling water doesn't work, try using a plunger. Make sure you have a good seal around the drain opening and use firm, consistent pressure. This can help to dislodge any blockages. 3. Baking Soda and Vinegar: Mix equal parts baking soda and vinegar (usually a half-cup of each is sufficient), pour it down the drain, and let it sit for an hour or so. The chemical reaction can help to break down the clog. Flush with hot water afterward. 4. Plumbing Snake or Drain Auger: If the clog is stubborn, a plumbing snake or drain auger can be used. This tool can reach deeper into the drain to break up or retrieve clogs. 5. Prevent Future Clogs: Regular maintenance, such as using drain strainers to catch hair and other debris, can prevent future clogs. Also, avoid pouring grease or oil down the drain. Remember, if these methods don't work or if the problem recurs frequently, it might be a sign of a more significant issue in your plumbing system. In such cases, it's best to consult a professional plumber.
  • What are the benefits of Drain Stream's regular drain cleaning services?
Regular cleaning by our professionals can prevent clogs, extend the life of your plumbing, and ensure your system operates efficiently.
  • What should I do if I notice early signs of plumbing issues?
Drain Stream advises not to ignore signs like leaks, odd noises, or inconsistent water pressure. Contact us for a thorough inspection to prevent minor issues from escalating.
  • Why is my drain clogged?
Drains can become clogged due to a variety of reasons, often related to the type of waste and debris that enters the drain. Here are some common causes: Hair: Hair is one of the most common culprits for clogged drains, especially in showers and bathroom sinks. Over time, hair can accumulate and entangle with other substances, forming a significant blockage. Grease and Fat: In kitchens, grease, fats, and oils that are washed down the sink can solidify inside the plumbing, leading to clogs. These substances stick to the inside of pipes and can be difficult to remove. Food Waste: Even with a garbage disposal, certain types of food waste can clog drains. Foods that expand when wet, such as pasta and rice, as well as fibrous foods like celery and coffee grounds, are particularly problematic. Soap Scum: Soap residue can accumulate over time, especially when mixed with minerals in hard water, leading to soap scum build-up that narrows pipes and causes blockages. Foreign Objects: Small objects, children's toys, or items accidentally dropped down the drain can become lodged and block water flow. Mineral Buildup: In areas with hard water, minerals dissolved in the water can deposit and build up inside pipes, gradually narrowing them and leading to clogs. Toilet Paper Accumulation: Excessive use of toilet paper, or flushing non-degradable items like wipes and sanitary products, can cause significant blockages in toilets. Tree Roots: For exterior plumbing, tree roots can grow into pipes, causing blockages and even pipe damage. Understanding the cause of your specific clog is crucial to determining the best method for removal and prevention. If you're unsure, or if home remedies don't resolve the issue, it's wise to consult a professional plumber.
  • What is drain cleaning?
It encompasses a range of techniques aimed at removing debris that blocks water flow in pipes, ensuring your drainage system functions at peak efficiency. It's hardly an appealing way for residents of Mississauga to spend their weekend. Proper pipe cleaning goes beyond DIY attempts; it's a task best left to professionals. While temporary fixes like chemical drain cleaners, drain snakes, and plungers might seem to clear blockages, these methods often provide short-lived relief and can even damage your drains, leading to more severe clogs. Store-bought drain cleaners might offer a quick fix, but they fall short of thoroughly cleaning your pipes and pose significant environmental risks. Ultimately, many homeowners realize the value of professional, regular drain cleaning. If your sinks start to drain slowly or become blocked, it's time to call in the experts to prevent potential disasters. Noticing slow drainage in your shower, bath, or sinks? This is a clear indicator of impending blockages. Identifying the root cause of drainage issues can be challenging, but our expert team is equipped to pinpoint and resolve these problems efficiently. Attempting to tackle these blockages on your own could exacerbate the issue, leading to costly repairs down the line for stubborn drains in your Mississauga home. Neglecting professional drain cleaning can expose your household to unhealthy living conditions. Don't wait for the problem to worsen. Contact us today for a comprehensive assessment and a no-obligation quote to keep your home's drainage system in optimal condition.
  • How do I practice drain maintenance?
Ensuring the longevity and health of your plumbing system is crucial, and proper maintenance plays a significant role in this. After our Mississauga specialists have thoroughly cleaned your drains, continuing with regular maintenance is key. Not only is preventive care vital, but understanding the best practices for maintaining your drains can save you from future headaches. Here are essential tips for effective drain maintenance. Utilize Drains Correctly The primary step in maintaining your drains is using them correctly. Avoid disposing of waste, especially food scraps and grease, down your drains to prevent clogs and damage. Accumulated fats can lead to significant blockages, disrupting the entire drainage system of your home. Fortunately, Drain Stream's cleaning techniques offer a solution. Our professionals provide expert advice on managing your plumbing system efficiently. Outdoor Drain Maintenance Your home's exterior drains require as much attention as the interior ones. Leaves, twigs, and other natural debris can clog outdoor drains, leading to potential flooding issues. Regularly clean catch basins, trough drains, and any outdoor stairwell drains to ensure water flows away from your property effectively. Consult With Drain Cleaning and Repair Specialists For those instances when maintenance seems daunting or if you encounter persistent issues, reaching out to Drain Stream's professional drain cleaning services in Mississauga is a wise decision. • Can I get a drain cleaning service near me for a fixed price?
Yes, we offer drain cleaning services with prices ranging from $215 to $540. The cost varies based on the complexity and urgency of the service. The average price we charge for local drain cleaning services is $360.
  • What are the prices for drain cleaning services near me?
Prices for drain cleaning services near you range from $215 to $540, with the average service costing about $395 in the GTA.
  • What causes clogged drains and other issues?
Clogged drains are a common issue in many households, often due to simple mistakes that can easily be avoided. Recognizing these common errors can help prevent future plumbing problems in your Mississauga home. Here's what you need to know: Non-Flushable Items Down the Toilet The toilet is designed to handle only three things: human waste, toilet paper, and water. Anything beyond this—such as toys, food, or grease—can lead to clogged pipes or, in severe cases, significant damage requiring expensive repairs. Grease in the Kitchen Sink Cooking fats and oils should never go down your kitchen sink. Instead, pour them into a container, allow them to solidify, and then dispose of them in the trash. Grease solidifies within the pipes, causing blockages that hinder your plumbing system's efficiency. Impact of Previous Homeowners If you've recently moved into a new home, the past maintenance habits of the previous occupants can affect your plumbing's current state. Without knowledge of their care for the pipes or frequency of professional cleaning, scheduling a check-up with our Mississauga drain experts can ensure your system's health and prevent unforeseen issues. Soap Scum and Hair in Showers Bathroom drains often suffer from blockages due to the accumulation of soap scum and hair. Regular cleaning and professional intervention can efficiently address these blockages, restoring your bathroom plumbing to optimal condition. By understanding and addressing these common causes of clogged drains, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of plumbing issues and maintain a healthy system. If you encounter any of these problems, our team is here to provide expert assistance, ensuring your drains remain clear and functional.
  • How often should I seek Mississauga drain cleaning?
Maintaining your home's plumbing system is crucial to avoid unexpected issues. In Mississauga, pipes can gradually become clogged due to everyday activities. Signs like slow draining sinks and tubs, gurgling noises after flushing, or unpleasant odours emanating from drains indicate it's time for a check-up, signalling potential backups. Regular activities, such as dishwashing, can contribute to clogs, particularly when grease and food particles accumulate in the pipes. Comparing your home's plumbing to the human cardiovascular system, where fats and grease akin to unhealthy diet choices lead to blockages, illustrates the importance of maintenance to prevent severe clogs.
